E.on energy customers set to get refunds after they were overcharged – how to claim

E.ON customers are in line for some money back on their energy bills after a payment issue meant they paid more than they should have.

Some E.on Next customers have been overcharged on their standard tariff, but the supplier has confirmed that they’ll now be refunded.

Energy customers are already bracing themselves for a rise in costs of almost £700 as the energy price cap goes up next month.

But some E.on Next customers had found they were charged the energy firm’s higher, non-direct debit prices when they were paying by direct debit, reports Martin Lewis’ MoneySavingExpert.

The supplier has been in touch with customers who were overcharged, issuing an apology and promising their money back – plus a little extra on top.

As well as refunding the additional amount that had been taken, E.on has said it will issue compensation for the inconvenience.

An E.on spokesperson said: “We are aware of this issue, which affected a small proportion of our customers and has now been resolved.

“Customers do not need to take any action. Credits will be applied to accounts where they are due along with a small goodwill payment as way of apology.”

Exactly how much money each affected customer will receive will vary – it depends on how much you might have been overcharged for in the first place.

But we don’t yet know exactly how much you could get for the “goodwill payment” – we’ve asked E.on if it’s the same for everyone affected and will update this story once we know more.

Only a small number of people were affected by the payment mishap according to the supplier.

But if you think you’ve also been overcharged, it’s worth getting in touch with E.on.

How to claim

If you were overcharged for your Eon Next tariff, then you should have already been contacted by the provider with details on how you’ll be credited.

It may have sent you an email explaining that money is on its way back into your account so look out for his in your inbox.

Whatever you’re owed as a refund will be paid back to your account automatically though.

That means there’s nothing you have to do but wait for the money to clear in your bank.

On top of refunding customers, E.on has told some that they’ll receive an extra payment of “goodwill”.

If you haven’t already been contacted, but believe there’s an issue with your energy bill too, get in touch with E.on on 0808 501 5200.

Of course you have to be an E.on Next customer to claim too, but if you have any other issues with your tariff or paying your bills you should get in touch with your supplier for help.

How to get help with energy bills

If you’re struggling to keep on top of your bills, or your worried about the price hikes that are on the way, there’s ways you can get help.

Plenty of organisations offer advice for free, including:

  • National Debtline – 0808 808 4000
  • Step Change – 0800 138 1111
  • Citizens Advice – 0808 800 9060

But you can also cash-in on grants and scheme like the Household Support Scheme while there’s still time.

You can still claim from the winter fuel payment scheme at the moment too.

The grant offers those getting the state pension between £100 and £300 to offset the cost of keeping their homes warm.
