Lidl GB has submitted a planning application to redevelop its existing store on Foots Cray High Street in Sidcup (planning application 21/00312/FULM) and is seeking the public’s feedback on the proposal.
The plans detail the replacement of the existing supermarket and warehouse building to the rear of the site, to create a new, modern and more spacious store, delivering a greater range of Lidl’s fresh, quality and affordable produce to the local area. Office space will also be built as part of the ambitious development.
The new supermarket forms part of the company’s £1.3bn investment plans across Great Britain in 2021 and 2022. It will feature a sales area of 1,408m², an instore bakery, customer toilet as well as 119 car parking spaces, including two rapid electric vehicle charging points, and 14 parking spaces dedicated for the offices included within the plans.
Once opened, the store is set to create an additional 20 jobs for the local economy as well as retaining all of the existing employees of the current store. Further employment opportunities will also be created through the provision of two office blocks, one on the first floor and the other in a small block fronting onto Foots Cray High Street.
Lidl GB’s Regional Head of Property, Colin Rimmer, commented: “We remain committed to investing in Foots Cray and are therefore delighted to announce that we have submitted a planning application with the London Borough of Bexley. Our previous application received tremendous amount of support from the local community and we have since taken the opportunity to implement the council’s feedback. If granted this would mark a multi-million pound investment in the area and provide an improved shopping experience for local residents as well as an even greater selection of Lidl’s fresh and affordable produce”.
The public are invited to comment on the proposals via a leaflet which will be posted directly to local residents and can be returned using the provided pre-paid envelopes. Residents with questions about the proposals can also get in touch with Lidl’s regional property office or leave their feedback at https://footscray.expansion.lidl.co.uk/.
Rimmer continued: “Our plans are set to create up to 20 new positions which would be fantastic for the local community, and we hope that as many people as possible are able to complete our online survey.”
Lidl’s ongoing success shows no signs of slowing, with the latest Kantar Worldpanel results highlighting Lidl’s increase in sales year on year and market share of 5.7%.
