The global maintenance, repair, and operations market’s estimated value in 2020 was $616.01 billion.  It is projected to register a value of $701.3 billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of about 2.19%.

If you have a car, you know that taking it for regular maintenance is an important part of car ownership. So, as a homeowner, what do you do when it comes to home appliance maintenance?

Typically, you have your HVAC system installed and ducted, but what happens when something goes wrong with it?

The answer lies in repair and maintenance. The question is, what is the difference? Well, we’re here to fill you in. Keep reading to learn more!

Repair

Repair is, quite simply, fixing something that’s broken. When you repair something, you are restoring it to its original condition. For example, if you have a hole in your drywall, you would repair it by patching the hole and then painting over it.

Maintenance

Maintenance, on the other hand, is all about preventive care. Rather than waiting for something to break, you take steps to keep it in good condition.

This can include things like regular cleaning and inspecting your gutters. This also includes changing the air filter in your furnace, or bleeding your radiator.

The Benefits of Maintenance

There are several benefits to performing regular maintenance. Rather than waiting for something to break and then repairing it.

For one, it’s usually cheaper to perform maintenance than it is to repair something. This is because repairs often need replacement parts and/or labor. Whereas maintenance is a matter of time.

Maintenance can help extend the life of your home or business. By inspecting and cleaning your gutters for example. You can prevent them from rusting or becoming clogged, which can eventually lead to leaks.

Finally, maintenance can help prevent accidents and injuries. For example, if you check your smoke detectors and change the batteries.

You’re less likely to have a fire in your home. Similarly, if you inspect your stairs and railings. You can prevent someone from falling and getting hurt.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is that repair is for fixing things that are already broken. While maintenance is for preventing things from breaking in the first place.

While repair is often necessary. It’s almost always cheaper and easier to perform regular maintenance. For professional help with construction equipment installation and maintenance, see more here.

Repair and Maintenance In General

One significant difference between repair and maintenance is the cost associated with each. Repairs are generally more expensive than maintenance. Why? It’s because they are fixing something that is already broken.

Maintenance is a lower cost because it is preventative. Another difference is the frequency of each.

Repairs are usually done on an as-needed basis. While maintenance’s done on a regular schedule.

If your appliance’s broken, you will need to repair it. If you want to keep your appliance working properly, you will need to do maintenance.
