Sophia Bush has revealed she won’t talk about her ex-husband and One Tree Hill co-star Chad Michael Murray because what she says is misconstrued.
The actress, who just got engaged to boyfriend Grant Hughes, was a guest on Smallville alum’s Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast when she was asked about her actor ex, who she was married to from 2005 to2006.
“Oh, I’m not going to talk about him,” Sophia explained. “You know what it is? I’m not allowed to because I’ve tried to poke fun at being a dumb kid and whenever I’ve done that, it gets twisted into I’m talking s**t about somebody who I don’t even know anymore, who’s clearly a grown-up.”
One Tree Hill stars Sophia and Chad met on the set of the teen drama in their early twenties and started dating in 2003.
Two years later, they wed in an apparent fairytale-esque ceremony in California – but just five months into their marriage, the young lovers separated and divorced in 2006.
However while Sophia is happy to make fun of the person she “used to be,” she explained she doesn’t want to do the same with Chad. “When people ask me about history that involves someone else … it’s not worth my time,” she said, “It’s not a place where I harbor ill will or anything.”
The actress, now 39, previously confessed that she never wanted to marry Chad – and only went through with it to please people around her.
Asked to confirm whether she meant she didn’t want to get married at such a young age, she said: “Ladies have to learn how to take up space in the way that men are taught they are entitled to.
“Because how do you let everybody down? And how do you, what’s the fight?” she went on.
“Life is always loaded. What the public knows ever is never — it’s not the tip of the iceberg. Hilarie [Burton, her One Tree Hill co-star] and I used to laugh and we were like, ‘if we had a behind-the-scenes show, the drama would be so much f**king better than the drama that the writers write’.”
However Chad shot back a furious response to claims from his ex-wife that their short-lived marriage was a sham.
Responding through his representative he said that Sophia’s claims she didn’t want to marry were “ludicrous”.
“Chad conducts himself in a completely professional manner and would never marry for any reason but love,” his spokesperson told People magazine.
Sophia told Michael on his podcast that she was a naïve 21-year-old and that because the prefrontal cortex of the brain isn’t formed until 26, she “literally didn’t have a whole brain” when she made the decision to get married.
The actress concluded that a real partnership now comes with radical honesty and being able to be vulnerable, explaining that “you have to do a lot of work.”
